Lucas Scholars Day 5

7/29/2017

So concludes the fifth year of the Lucas Scholars Program. It bears reminding that the projects you can view on our Media Wall were created in three days. Students went through the engineering and design process to come up with a project they wanted to create, then they prototyped their solution and improved upon their build. It was a daunting challenge, but these scholars rose to the occasion. We have a simple three pronged motto at Lucas Scholars: To work hard. Have Fun and Be a scholar.  Our 2017 Lucas Scholars accomplished all three of these tenets.  That does not mean there was not creative frustration along the way. Scholars struggled and doubted themselves, but with the guidance of their mentor's encouragement, they were able to pull together to communicate the projects that were exhibited this Friday.  I would like to personally recognize our partner organizations: KIPP Academy of Innovation the Neighborhood Youth Association, Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club and Empowher for providing us with such amazing scholars for the week. Also, this week would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of our staff: Reynaldo Macias, Dr. Dijanna Figueroa, Tom Diggs, Manny Quintero, Rebecca Waid, Jillian Esby and Adrienne Bononi.
Till next year!

Lucas Day 4 2017

7/27/2017

Lucas Scholars Day 4:

Work Hard. Then work harder. Then repeat. Our scholars arrived for Day 4 of Lucas Scholars ready to continue to prototype, test and iterate their designs. We had PIRL, PIRL Terrace, LARC, and 502 humming along to the beat of glue guns, power tools, and 3D printers. Projects are coming together, and scholars are getting ready to communicate their work at our exhibition tomorrow night. With one more day to go, I am confident that this group of Lucas Scholar will continue to work hard and of course leave some energy to have fun.

Día 4.

Trabajar duro.

Day 3:

Today, Lucas Scholars officially began. Day 3 is Project Declaration day. Students arrived on campus and were given two ultimatums: declare the members in your group and explain what you will design. After a few moments of initial anxiety, the scholars came together, and PIRL began to hum with creative energy. In 30 minutes time, we had 10 projects declared. This year we have projects ranging from a prototype Lamborgini, to a crossbow, to stop motion and green screen films and robots that spin, move and prepare slides for microscopes. It is an exciting time to be a mentor for these projects, and as a team, we are excited to continue our design process tomorrow. As always, please check out the Media Wall for up to date photographs.

Till tomorrow,

Lucas Scholars Day 2:

Our scholars returned for the second day of workshops that expanded upon the skills they learned yesterday. Mixed into this day of classes were a few memorable moments.

It began with instruction on how to properly shake hands. Led by our volunteer coordinator, Jillian Esby, the scholars were taken through a series of undesirable handshakes routines that included: the fish, the princess, and the boss. Only after demonstrating these incorrect skills were scholars able to recognize the components that make up a quality handshake.

Naturally, scholars worked hard in all of their workshops; however, members of the Green Group demonstrated a true love in scholarship in their dedication to science. The entire Green Group arrived late to our pool day because they just wanted to finish their science experiments. That is inspired learning.

Lastly, Dr. Figueroa and Tom Digg’s lead students through the Design Process. Having completed our instruction in some core competencies for the program, it is now up to the scholars to decide how they will be the change and what they will build.

The program kicks into high gear starting tomorrow. So stay posted to our Media Wall to catch the action as it unfolds.

Till tomorrow,

Jonny Drummey

Jonny Drummey.

Lucas Scholars Day 1:

Day One of Lucas Scholars 2017 is in the books. 31 scholars from four different organizations greeted us this morning. We hit the ground running with a tour of St. Matthew’s and then our mentors took the reins and led scholars through 4 sections of classes: Characteristics of Life, Stop Motion Animation, Hero’s Journey and Hummingbird. We had a wild “Tinker Time” fueled by a delicious snack of watermelon pizza and then scholars were sent off on their busses.

We are doubling down on our instruction with a full day two set up for tomorrow. Scholars are reminded to bring a towel and swim attire as we will be hitting the campus pool. So far, so great! Lucas Scholars 2017 is all about working together, having fun and being scholars.

Till tomorrow,

Jonny Drummey
